How to record your phone screen and your face together for a tutorial
Updated 3 October 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer
Connect the phone to ByteMirror over USB or Wi-Fi and add it to OBS Studio as a ByteMirror Phone source, then add your webcam as a Video Capture Device in the same scene and press Start Recording. With a webcam this works on the free plan; using a second phone as the facecam needs Pro or Lifetime.
App demos and tutorials need two things on screen: the phone and you. Window-capturing a mirroring app leaves window borders to crop.
ByteMirror gives OBS the phone's own video as a source, at the phone's resolution, with its sound.
Steps
- 1Install ByteMirrorRun the Windows installer with the OBS Studio option ticked.
- 2Connect the phoneAn iPhone by its cable or AirPlay, or an Android phone through the ByteMirror app or USB debugging.
- 3Build the sceneIn OBS Studio, add a ByteMirror Phone source and pick the phone's screen. Add your webcam as a Video Capture Device and place it next to the phone.
- 4RecordTurn on Do Not Disturb or a Focus on the phone so notifications stay out of the video, then click Start Recording in OBS.
Sound
The phone's sound is part of its source, so you can set it apart from your microphone in the OBS audio mixer. Apps that block screen recording, such as some video apps, show a black picture.
Quality
The free plan records at 720p and 30 fps, with no watermark for the first 7 days and then for 30 minutes a day. Pro and Lifetime go up to 1080p at 60 fps with no watermark.
